The Hon. I. Chester Cooper, Acting Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation on Jonquel Jones Leading Team to Historic WNBA Title
On behalf of the government of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, I would like to congratulate Jonquel Jones for leading the New York Liberty to their first WNBA win and being named the Most Valuable Player of the Finals.
This historic win, the first for the franchise in WNBA history, was no small feat and showcased the indomitable spirit and focus of Jonquel who, in the best of five games, demonstrated her athletic talent first seen on the basketball courts on Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama Island, and cemented her place in the record books.
The Bahamas is blessed to have a daughter of our soil who embodies the spirit of the Bahamian people with her tenacity and competitiveness which have inspired countless Bahamians and thousands of fans around the world.
Jonquel continues to be an outstanding ambassador for The Bahamas especially for young Bahamian girls. Her dominance in professional women’s basketball shows that although a tiny nation in size, we are mighty in the athletic prowess of our homegrown athletes.
While Jonquel’s win put us again on the world stage, it also ensured that we were seen as not only a leading tourist nation but also a nation that produces professional athletic stars, solidifying our standing as a sports tourism mecca.
We are indeed proud of all of Jonquel’s accomplishments. At the appropriate time, we will host a Bahamian celebration fit for this momentous win.
Again, congratulations on behalf of a grateful and proud nation.
